The color wheel is younger than you'd think.
Organizing color into a circle is a relatively recent idea — for most of history, color was described in lists, not relationships. Here's how the wheel as we know it came together.
Aristotle's linear scale
Aristotle proposed color as a straight line between white and black, with other colors arranged in between by how much darkness they contained. No wheel yet — color was a gradient, not a circle.
Isaac Newton's color circle
Newton split white sunlight through a prism into a spectrum, then bent that spectrum into a circle in his book Opticks — the first true color wheel. He placed the seven spectral hues (red through violet) around the circumference and used it to explain how colors combine.
Goethe's Theory of Colours
Goethe rejected parts of Newton's purely physical account and built a wheel organized around human perception and emotional response instead — pairing colors he considered opposites (like yellow and blue) across the circle. Scientifically contested even at the time, but hugely influential on painters.
Chevreul's law of simultaneous contrast
Michel-Eugène Chevreul, running the dye works at a French tapestry manufacturer, documented how placing colors next to each other changes how each is perceived — the basis for what we now call complementary contrast, and a direct influence on the Impressionists.
Munsell's three-dimensional system
Albert Munsell replaced the flat wheel with a 3D model — hue around the circle, value (lightness) on a vertical axis, and chroma (saturation) as distance from the center. This is structurally the same HSL/HSV space this tool's wheel uses.
Itten's Bauhaus color wheel
Johannes Itten, teaching at the Bauhaus, formalized the 12-hue wheel (3 primary, 3 secondary, 6 tertiary) most people learn today, along with the harmony schemes — complementary, triadic, and so on — this tool's harmony selector is built around.
CIE color space, then sRGB
The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) defined a mathematical model of human color perception in 1931. In 1996, Microsoft and HP standardized sRGB — the color space nearly every screen, including the one you're reading this on, uses by default.
